Ancillary Task Research – poster

with the short film we are also meant to create an ancillary task, the ones I have chosen are the most typical of what students choose however they are they best ones…

The ancillary task I have chosen is to make a poster and to make a magazine article about the short film. Our initial idea has helped me understand what type of poster or magazine article to look at and what influences I need to create an industry standard poster and magazine article.

One of the main aspects of our film is the fully black eyes that cover the whites, as this is a unique concept I believe it is our USP and should be used in the marketing of the short film. As I have never made neither of these types of things in-depth I need to look at some styles.

Last year for Invisible Illnesses we made a poster even though it wasn’t part of the production we found it further ours skills and knowledge of what goes into a production.Invisible illnesses.jpg

So yes it is pretty ropey but we learned about composition of the shot, how to entice the audience in by using an upside down shot it creates confusion, and again we seem to have a thing about have strange eyes.

The title is awful I will admit it but it follows conventions of a poster and that’s all it needed to do when making this poster for our opening sequence.

I do quite like this poster which is inspired by the autopsy of Jane Doe, we basically just copied the whole concept instead of taking influences and coming up with an original concept.

Lets look at some better versions of posters…

This poster is right up my street I love the composition with the eyes being the main focus. The tilting below mixing in with the branches and the low-key lighting. This is my kind of poster!

Obviously the most typical thing we will take from this is the black eyes as this is a main focus in our short film however I also like the composition of her face and the lighting used.

The font isn’t something I aspire to use in my ancillary task as its very horror/gothic themed however it does work well with the whole poster and that is the genre of the poster.

It has just dawned on my that all of these poster are going to be right up my street…

anyway onto the Black swan, the part the initially made me choose this poster to look at was the strong composition of the face however as I look closer the crack in her face is magnificent and truly tells a story of what happens in the black swan.

again I really see the influences this can have on my own poster and the way it is constructed, I like the idea of having a crack down the face this may be something that could be included in the making of the poster

This poster is a bit more out  and probably my least favourite but it incorporates all the previous style models.

I like the cracked glass as it looks like she is cracking though or as if she is hit by a bullet, I like the black eyes it incorporates our initial idea of having full black eyes however this poster uses the black eyes to complete the idea of a skull but I can still see the influences and the style of this poster and the way it can impact on my own poster for Maere.

The eye also has the strong composition like black swan and dark touch however the shot is not as extreme of a close up, the eyes again are similar to the poster I made in AS however I like the colour palette with the blue tint so I can see this being influential on the making of my own poster.

By having a blue tint it suggest night-time and its also a common convention used within horrors and thrillers as it suggests an uneasy atmosphere.
