Developed initial ideas

the initial idea was sleep paralysis, this was our starting point so we began building our ideas around this initial theme inspired by Nicholas Bruno. The name of the short film was originally going to be called The iris masquerade however there wasn’t something about that name that felt a bit clichéd therefore I began searching through google latin names of sleep paralysis, dreams in Latin and so forth until I actually googled what was sleep paralysis first called, the original name and it said Maere which comes from an old German word that literally means Paralysis of the sleep, I feel having this historic tie from what sleep paralysis really works with our modern twist of what we are trying to portray.

Typically Brittany and I did our trip to costa to figure what the hell we are going to do what our ideas were and how they are all gonna fit together, this became a 4 hour long costs trip but was well worth it as we now have a definite idea that we are building towards.

For this to make sense you need to understand that wtamsinssse are doing our short film inspired by the poem I wrote called the Iris Masquerade, we have split the poem into 6 different sections and come up with a narrative/nightmare for each section. In my earlier posts I have talked about the narrative arc.

This is basically a visual narrative arc and at what section the poem will be at within the narrative arc so for example 1 is a climax but 6 will be at a high climax than number 1 and number 2 and 3 are equal the same for 4 and 5.

Here are the sections for each part of the poem123

These bits are the sections of the poem and each section will have its own imagery and nightmare.
Opening Scene
  • Lavender field as the camera tracks a single white feather with slight focus blurs and pulls as we travel through the lavender

-Inspired by Forest Gump’s opening scene

Section 1
  • Dimly lit tunnel as Tamsin (me!!!) walks through she sees others with demonic fully black eyes we began to realise that this is the demonic version of Tamsin in her dreams, we then see a whip pan into the eyes of non demonic Tamsin.
  • Dreaming Tamsin wearing a long white dress with a black pendant crystal
  • Demonic Tamsin wearing a long black white with a black pendant crystal

Demonic Tamsin

This is a masquerade of the iris
The dance macabre

-Inspired by Black Swan

-Inspired by the exorcism of Emily Rose

Section 2

  • Tamsin wakes up in a forest chained to a bed with a demonic version of herself pointing at her with a bow and arrow. Underneath the bed is purple smoke emerging.  Demonic Tamsin turns to the camera and her face drops demonically.
  • Dreaming Tamsin wearing a long white dress with a  3/4 black pendant crystal
  • Demonic Tamsin wearing a long black white with a black pendant crystal

-Inspired by Nicholas Bruno

Section 3

  • The demonic Tamsin in section 2’s last scene has a graphic match into section 3 where we see dreaming Tamsin lied peacefully in a lake as she speaks part of the poem. She is then suddenly pulled underwater and begin to drown whilst the camera calmly pulls out.
  • Dreaming Tamsin wearing a long white dress with a  1/4 black pendant crystal

Dreaming Tamsin

My thoughts rejected by my own frame
my lungs are full of water, but I am not drowning
my dress is soaked, but I am not wearing clothing

-Inspired by Nicholas Bruno

-Inspired by a Requilium dream

Section 4

  • The Camera from the last shot flips up to the sky and then flips back down but the location has changed to a beach we see dreaming Tamsin who is tied up by her hands and feet with rope as she walks blind folded into the sea

  • Dreaming Tamsin wearing a long white dress with a  1/4 black pendant crystal

Dreaming Tamsin

Do not tell me I am mistaken as they breathe down my neck
Are we laughing at my affliction
I imagine it would be golden
As that’s a colour I dream to recognize

Section 5

  • Graphic match of the feet shackled stood at the edge of Malam Cove, we see Demonic Tamsin Is stood with a long arrow with black feathers pushing blindfolded Tamsin of the edge, as they are both in this scene to show this we are going to do a spin into demonic Tamsin’s point of view as she looks at Dreaming Tamsin
    • Dreaming Tamsin wearing a long white dress with a  3/4 black pendant crystal
    • Demonic Tamsin wearing a long black white with a black pendant crystal

  • Demonic Tamsin

They scream we are all unique
but will carve you into a structure

Dreaming Tamsin

You look at me as if I begged on the floor for your pity
That I took your hand and kissed it gracefully
when in reality or perhaps not in reality

Section 6

  • Dimly lit tunnel the same in section one however this time we see Tamsin walk down the tunnel we see more than one demonic Tamsin all screaming at her with stretched mouths and black eyes, Dreaming Tamsin and Demonic Tamsin say the last two lines of the poem together before Dreaming Tamsin closes her eyes and opens them up to find her eyes have gone black and she screams fading into a high pitch frequency at the end dipping to white.
  • Dreaming Tamsin wearing a long white dress with a black pendant crystal
  • Demonic Tamsin wearing a long black white with a black pendant crystal

    Demonic and Dreaming Tamsin

Deception is a clasp to the dark
where my echo’s don’t scream

That is basically what our short film will have and what it will look like…

I hope you can begin to see how our short film is going to come together.
