magazine final edit

The style model we have used ended up being the one from salt, I liked the layout and how the balance between the text and images made a realistic magazine double page spread.

within this magazine we have used the text…

This new short film explores mental health and in many could be said to be similar to “13 Reasons Why”, however the director of “Aurora” disputes this statements and comments “ 13 Reasons why is the reason we made this film due to its negative impact, we wanted to change the outcome and reactions people were having to suicide”. This new innovative short film which is called ‘Aurora’ named after its main character explores the harrowing effects depression and grief can take. The actress who plays Aurora, who is also the director is sensitivity is key to the successes of her short film.   We have all wanted to see how others would react if we were to suddenly die, who would turn up to the funeral and who would actually miss us, but the reality is that we would never find out. Our society romanticizes death, but the harsh reality is. Death is difficult and far from beautiful.

This short film raises the questions of why romanticize something so horrible into something so tragically beautiful.

Shame. Why should we feel ashamed of who we are as people? Why is it okay for others to shame us? Why is it okay to shame ourselves? It’s not. So many people are hesitant to talk from fear of being called an “attention seeker”, or mocked, or to be unheard. But it’s okay to talk. There are people who will listen. Mental health problems can affect the way you think and feel and shouldn’t be treated with a stigma. 1 in 4 people are affected by a mental health problem and it shouldn’t be anything to be ashamed of. The writer of ‘Aurora’ during an interview said” I was ashamed. I wanted to hide it away from the world and pretend it didn’t exist, but that nearly killed me from the inside out. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. And just because you’re not dealing with a mental health condition now, doesn’t mean you, or someone you love, never will. You don’t have to understand it, just acknowledge that it exists, and respect that it affects people’s lives all over the world. You is not your disorder. This is your life.

The release of ‘Aurora’ will premiere first on BBC3 on their IPlayer which is exclusive for first time filmmakers, the reason that has such an opportunity is because of their topic and the way in which they have approached it.

They also have taken inspiration from one of the first portrayals of female suicide which Ophelia from Hamlet (originally written by Shakespeare), the portrayal of Ophelia is very classic however with a modern twist of a milk bath and flowers surrounding her body. Having this suggests how society romanticizes suicide into something beautiful and manageable, as humans we cannot understand why someone would want to take their life in such a gruesome way so we change it into something our minds can rest easy with. . ‘Aurora’ defiantly challenges these ideas and shows the brutality of suicide however in the end Aurora decides to not go through with it, the short film shows us that there is a different option and a different path, there is always help no matter how dark the tunnel. Although the short film can be harsh and somewhat uncomfortable to watch, this subject needs to be explored in order for change to occur.

We are programmed to think mental health is a personal topic that we should not speak about, whereas this short film lets us in with nothing The film Aurora shows it from the perspective of a young girl who has lost her friend and is trying to find the answer to how she goes on living in life without her. It is also designed to de-stigmatise mental health issues and help those who haven’t been through them understand what it feels like to go through.

We have wrote in an informal way as this is how our style model portrays it, by having friendly way of writing it entices our audience in and adds to the audience gratification rather than it being a block of formal text.

We have used a picture of Ophelia as the main image that goes across the double page spread, we have thought about the positioning of the image across the magazine that the split rests on her neck, adding symbolism and a signifier to the piece.

the colour palette within the salt review was blue and orange, this had no synergy with out own piece therefore we have changed the colour palette to fit our theme or purple and orange.
