Master shot

A master shot is a film recording of an entire dramatized scene, from start to finish, from an angle that keeps all the players in view. It is often a long shot and can sometimes perform a double function as an establishing shot.

What this means is that by having a master shot we can add cut ins and move back to the master shot as the scene takes place. This is extremely helpful within dialogue as it gives you a range edits you can add into the shot.

Within our own work it gives us freedom of allowing us to choose how we edit the scene together when it comes to post-production, the difficulty with this is having perfect continuity to make a believe scene.

Tracking shot

A tracking shot is any shot where the camera moves alongside the object(s) it is recording. In cinematography, the term refers to a shot in which the camera is mounted on a camera dolly that is then placed on rails – like a railroad track. The camera is then pushed along the track while the image is being filmed.

Another way of using a tracking shot is by using a steadicam or a gimbal, the gimbal is something we plan to use within our own short film to take us into the shots and to add movement, we can take inspiration from the GoodFellas directed by Martin Scorsese with there 3 minute long tracking shot into an entertainment place where they go through the backdoor through the kitchen and into the place.
